/ The Framework

A programme is more than a bigger project.

Projects typically create defined outputs and capabilities. Programmes coordinate related projects and other organisational activity so that those capabilities lead to outcomes and measurable benefits.

PRINCE2 Programme Management provides a structured framework for leading that change while maintaining strategic alignment, governance and continued focus on value.

Strategic alignment

Connect programme investment and delivery to the organisation's priorities and adapt when those priorities change.

Outcomes and benefits

Focus beyond project outputs to the changes, outcomes and measurable benefits the programme exists to create.

Coordinated delivery

Manage related projects, capabilities and organisational activity as part of a coherent programme rather than as isolated initiatives.

Governance and decisions

Establish clear leadership, accountabilities, assurance and decision-making so that complex change remains directed and controlled.

Official PRINCE2 Programme Management Information

/ Foundation and Practitioner

Understand programme management. Then apply it.

Understand the framework

PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation

Foundation develops understanding of the programme management framework, including its principles, governance themes, processes, roles and the relationship between capabilities, outcomes and benefits.

Suitable for programme and project professionals, programme office staff, business change roles and others who need a structured understanding of programme management.

Apply the framework

PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner

Practitioner develops the ability to apply and tailor the framework to programme scenarios and make appropriate decisions about governance, delivery, benefits and organisational change.

It moves beyond understanding towards using programme management guidance in complex and changing environments.

Practitioner prerequisites apply. The appropriate pathway depends on the learners’ existing qualifications and the objectives of the programme.

/ How Andrew Trains

Frameworks matter. What people do with them matters more.

01

Understand it.

Frameworks should make sense. Andrew explains the logic behind the method rather than asking people to memorise terminology.

02

Work with it.

Learners discuss, question and apply ideas throughout the session. Learning is something they participate in, not something delivered at them.

03

Use it.

Examples, exercises and discussion connect the framework to real projects, decisions and working environments.

Training that travels back to work.

/ VERSION 5

Three lenses. One programme lifecycle.

PRINCE2 Programme Management Version 5 is the updated branding of MSP 5th edition and retains its seven principles, seven governance themes and seven processes.

01

Principles

Seven guiding obligations describe the characteristics of effective programme management and inform decisions throughout the programme.

Purpose · Collaboration · Ambiguity · Priorities · Diverse Skills · Benefits · Pace and Value

02

Governance themes

Seven themes address the key areas of programme governance that need continued attention throughout the lifecycle.

Organization · Design · Justification · Structure · Knowledge · Assurance · Decisions

03

Processes

Seven processes provide the structured progression through the programme lifecycle, from identifying the programme through to closure.

Identify · Design · Plan · Deliver · Embed · Evaluate · Close

/ Programme Focus

Keep the change connected to the reason for doing it.

Benefits

Maintain focus on measurable benefits rather than treating delivery of projects or capabilities as the end result.

Stakeholders

Work across organisational boundaries and engage the people whose support, decisions and behaviour are essential to successful change.

Progressive delivery

Deliver capabilities and outcomes progressively, using new information to adjust the programme rather than assuming everything can be known at the start.

Business change

Recognise that successful programmes depend on new capabilities being adopted and embedded into the organisation's everyday work.

/ PRINCE2 Programme Management Delegate Feedback

Make programme management practical.

“Andrew was brilliant. Engaged with us all, but also would take a step back and allow for us to engage in debate with one another over interpretations of the material and real world application. He clearly knew his stuff and was a great teacher.”
Abel · Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust · PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation
